Russell Powell is an accomplished oil painter and creator of a unique handstamping technique. His method is to create a portrait on his hand and then transfer the image to paper. Handstamping, which took over two and half years to refine, utilizes both color and black and white ink.

A self-taught artist, Russell has been teaching elementary school art for the past sixteen years in Campbell, outside his hometown of San Jose, California. He credits his students as a major source of inspiration for his work. To showcase the products of his passion Russell founded Pangaean Studios in 2012.

In this old law enforcement photo from 1924, we see a police officer trying on a ‘cow shoe’ used by moonshiners to disguise their footprints. In the United States alcohol was banned from 1920-1933 in an era known as Prohibition.

Moonshine (a type of strong, homemade whiskey) was often made by bootleggers in the middle of a forest or meadow. So the moonshiners would wear cow shoes like these to avoid drawing the attention of any law enforcement looking for human activity in the woods.

Google’s AI is Teaching Itself Photography and It’s Getting Pretty Good https://www.artofit.org/2021/07/16/googles-ai-is-teaching-itself-photography-and-its-getting-pretty-good-2/ https://www.artofit.org/2021/07/16/googles-ai-is-teaching-itself-photography-and-its-getting-pretty-good-2/#respond Fri, 16 Jul 2021 02:17:57 +0000 https://www.artofit.org/?p=168739

A new research paper by Google researchers Hui Fang and Meng Zhang has outlined their attempt to teach Google’s AI how to take aesthetically pleasing photos.

Creatism: A deep-learning photographer capable of creating professional work are the researchers attempt to apply machine learning to the creative process.

The first step was to define different aesthetic aspects of photography like composition, saturation and detail. They then analyzed 15,000 high-ranking photo thumbnails from 500px.com so the neural network could begin to understand which cropping and lighting effects were the most popular.

The next step was to unleash the machine on Google Street View and let it take snapshots of scenic locations and crop and light the results accordingly.

The final step was to administer a “Turing-test”-like experiment to objectively measure the quality of its creations. To do this the researchers asked six professional photographers—all of whom had at least a bachelor’s degree in photography and two years of professional photo experience—to independently evaluate the photos.

Each photo was ranked 1-4, where 1 indicated a beginner-level photo with little artistic merit and 4 indicated a professional photo. None of the photographers knew that any of the photos had been generated by a machine. [Source: Motherboard]

Of the 173 photos evaluated, 41% were ranked at or above a semi-pro level (3 or greater), and 13% of the photos scored at or above 3.5. In comparison, 45% of actual professional photos received a score of 3.5 or higher. [source]

You can find all 256 photos and the original Google Map Street View locations on GitHub. You can read “Creatism: A deep-learning photographer capable of creating professional work” at arXiv.org.

The MTA Banned Dogs on the Subway Unless They Fit in a Bag, but this is New York City https://www.artofit.org/2021/07/16/the-mta-banned-dogs-on-the-subway-unless-they-fit-in-a-bag-but-this-is-new-york-city/ https://www.artofit.org/2021/07/16/the-mta-banned-dogs-on-the-subway-unless-they-fit-in-a-bag-but-this-is-new-york-city/#respond Fri, 16 Jul 2021 01:47:46 +0000 https://www.artofit.org/?p=168714

When the MTA banned dogs on the subway last October pet owners were outraged.

“No person may bring any animal on or into any conveyance or facility unless enclosed in a container and carried in a manner which would not annoy other passengers.” [source]

The rules were clear but this is NYC and New Yorkers are not ones to take anything lying down. Soon dogs of all sizes were riding the subway in bags of all sizes. Photos of these ‘doggybags’ shortly followed on social media.

Owners got creative, dogs continued to ride, and other passengers got a chuckle. Below you will find 11 hilarious examples of the ‘doggybag’ phenomenon, enjoy!

A recent print campaign by Ogilvy Bangkok has been awarded three silver lions (in ‘Print & Publishing’ and ‘Outdoor’) and a bronze (in ‘Design’) at the Cannes festival this year, the most prestigious award show in marketing and advertising.

“Build the Future” has been so well received that Ogilvy has made plans to have actual life-size LEGO sculptures built as an extension of the campaign. This isn’t the first time we’ve featured creative ads by LEGO, be sure to check out previous campaigns here and here.

A recent article in The Atlantic highlights a dinosaur that was found by miners in Canada that was so well-preserved it could have been mistaken for a sculpture. Discovered by construction worker Shawn Funk in March 2011, the find has been hailed as one of the best-preserved armoured dinosaurs in the world.

Illustration via Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology

As per The Atlantic:

The dinosaur that Funk unearthed—a 110-million-year-old creature named Borealopelta—was one of the ankylosaurs—a group of heavy-set, low-slung, tank-like dinosaurs. It lacked the shin-thwacking tail clubs that some of its relatives wielded, but its back was covered in heavy, armored scales, and a pair of 20-inch-long spikes jutted from its shoulders. It weighed 1.5 tons and was 20 feet from foot to tail.
